A short while back,
pix_kristin insisted I read
Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader by Anne Fadiman. I have to admit, I put it off a couple weeks -- mostly because I was still finishing "Wintersmith" by Terry Pratchett,
final_girl's excellent
Jokes and the Unconscious and the third and fourth volumes of Grant Morrison's "Doom Patrol," but also because, generally speaking, I'm rarely interested in essays about
reading. Which is odd, I suppose, as I've been an avid reader since I was small, and have probably gained more comfort and joy out of the act of curling up with books than I have just about anything else. From "Spider-Man" to Shakespeare, reading has carried me through some of the hardest times in my life, and to this day, I can't sleep without reading
something for a few minutes before going to bed. And those who've been to our apartment know it's practically
buried in books.
Books and me? We're close.
But
pix_kristin was correct. I started "Ex Libris" yesterday and plowed through two-thirds of it. Fadiman's got a crackling prose style -- every line crisp and vibrant, and the joy she takes in books is infectious -- in owning books, in reading them, in sharing them. The book's an absolute delight, and I keep finding myself laughing out loud with recognition. Terribly, terribly glad it was thrown at me.
