Making Christmas
Dec. 8th, 2006 09:28 amI've had Tim Burton songs in my head all week -- alternating between "Making Christmas" and "Kidnap the Sandy Claws." Haven't even seen "Nightmare Before Christmas" in a few years. Might need to rectify that.
Every year I have vague notions of paring down our Christmas card lists, of limiting the amount of presents we buy, etc. And I think, to an extent, we actually do. Ah, but then, there you are, hunched over a stack of Christmas cards with your address book open. And it takes just long enough that you have to contemplate each name, and take that long moment to meditate on their role in your life.
Some are obviously important; some less so, but have burrowed into your heart anyway. Some you miss all the time, others you didn't realize how much you missed until you saw their names. A few, you have no idea why you even hold onto their addresses, especially when you're missing addresses for people you care for more. One or two you're not entirely certain are alive anymore, and one or two you know full-well aren't.
It adds up. You touch hundreds upon hundreds of people in your life, and each one of them has made a small impression on the person you are. That's something worth honoring.
