Gerald Ford died this morning. He shouldn't have been president, and he once said that he was going to Hell for pardoning Nixon, but ultimately, I always thought Ford was a decent enough man who, like Carter, did more good leaving the White House than he did while he was in it. I'm willing to take at face value his belief that indicting Nixon would have been worse for the country than his disgrace, although I still think that was wrongheaded.
Nixon broke the heart of the American dream, and America needed to see him pay for that. Not just drummed out of office. I don't think we've ever really healed as a nation since then, and there's a little Nixon cancer at the heart of Washington's current malaise.
Still, I'm willing to believe Ford was well-intentioned enough, and I hope he's resting in peace.
