I've never been a big Oscars watcher, and in a year like this, where I've barely gotten to the movies at all, it's kind of surprising I watched the whole thing, but the allure of Jon Stewart was too much to resist. (And bonus Stephen Colbert voiceovers!)

Stewart was great -- funny, charming, took a few good shots without being obnoxious -- but then, I'm a fan. Lord knows what the Holywood types thought of him.

On the other side, I found myself musing on old-fashioned Hollywood grace and style, and noting that you can really see a trace of it still in Nicle Kidman and Charlize Theron. But really, there was only one actress who just hit me over the head as being both stunning and graceful up there:

title or description

Seriously, Salma Hayek is amazing to watch, and her presence has just grown exponetially over the years. And as she continues, she manages to gain more and more gravitas. In a stage full of Hollywood glitz, she seemed more solid than most. Really, for my money, the only male actor who had that up there was George Clooney.

Yeah, I was rather taken with her presense as well. That dress for one thing, but also I got to thinking about how it's important for her hair to stay to the side it did to wear the dress properly. I don't think I'd have it in me to not be fidgety with it all night.

Not fidgeting is a big part of it. In the red carpet interviews beforehand, you can see a LOT of actreses fidgeting with their hair or their dresses. Not terribly or even distractingly so, but enough that you notice.

Actually, I was kinda irritated with her for continually messing with her hair (and, I think the strap of her dress) while on-stage.

Huh. Must have missed it.

Gravitas? Is that what the kids are calling them?

Well ... that too.... (:

But yeah, gravitas. When she walks on that stage now, she knows she's not some disposable Hollywood ingenue anymore.

i had a sublime/surreal moment last week at work when ms. hayek came in to shop for dvds with michel gondry. i couldn't have been more at a loss for words.

for what it's worth, she was sharp as a tack and down-to-earth nice.

I beliive that. She certainly seems smart in interviews, and on th "Frida" commentary.

I was watching the Oscars with a man who had mastered the art of ogling gorgeous women while seemingly not looking their way at all.

Last night, he not only lost it completely, but he made a desperate little sound I've never heard him make before. I looked at the screen, and there was Selma Hayek.

She was as glamorous as I've ever seen anyone. I'll bet J-Lo was STEAMIN'.

Yeah, J-Lo never pulls it off -- and don't get me wrong, she looked good this year. But she doesn't have the poise or the presence to be anything more than an attractive person, usually in a tasteless dress (not last night though. J-Lo was positively conservative!)

Victor, did you know that she's apparently starting to have trouble getting parts because she's...

Wait for it...

GETTING TOO OLD?!?!?

Graar. Salma rules.

Yeah, that's been one of Hollywood's problems since the begining of time. I have a feeling she'll pull through it OK, though. She seems to be forging her on path, lately.
